I needed to update this because it was such a great experience and I misspoke in my earlier draft. My wife gave "us" a 4-day get-away to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho for right after Christmas. This charming town is a 3.5 hour from where we live, is full of great galleries, restaurants, shops and sights so is a nice place to explore and enjoy. But I was a little hesitant as we were staying at a bed & breakfast and I just don't like B&Bs for lodging. The McFarland Inn crashed my bias almost instantly and here is why. In my experience, B&Bs are old, over-decorated, sometime musty and, especially those with 10 or more rooms are a mob scene at breakfasts and with any amenities offered. Usually no TV in your room, sometimes sharing a bathroom and maybe staying in the room previously occupied by a child now living away from home. Also, there is neither the privacy, nor the sense of comfort that I enjoy. Especially when the operators are using their house during my stay and I am "intruding" or some would say "sharing" their routines. Yuck! Ain't charming to me at all. So here we are at the five room McFarland Inn. It was immaculately clean, super well maintained and the interior "decorations" were simple and tasteful. Not the flowery grandmotherish decor of my B&B experiences. The owner, Nancy, gave us a very nice tour and briefing, along with marking on a city map locations in which we expressed interest. We were set. Our room was beautiful. King bed, large private bath, TV and DVD player, higher grade than normal Gilchrist & Holmes (?) amenities, plush towels, a shower that worked rather than dribbled water, a writing desk, plenty of lights, complementary water bottles, a down-filled duvet on the nicely firm bed and even chocolates on the pillow each night. Come on! This was great and she has four other similar rooms, each with it's own bathroom. Nancy's "quarters" are in a separate part of the upstairs, so the house is for the guests. No feeling like you are living with the family or operator. There is a guest refrigerator stocked with sodas, water, ice and a variety of cookies, fudge, crackers, cheese and other goodies left over from her daily "layouts." In the evenings there is wine, cheese, crackers and cookies out for guests and coffee, hot chocolate and tea-fixings are available 24/7, along with packaged snacks. Off the entry is a very comfy more formal living room and through the kitchen is a den with TV, DVD and a ton of movies and books for the guests to use. Read or watch them in your room and return them to the library when done. The breakfast room is the screened/glassed porch looking out on a nice treed yard. And a hot tub is in its own gazebo just outside. In more clement weather the yard must be beautiful. And she has bicycles free the use of guests. Better than paying to rent bikes locally. Breakfast is far from the carbohydrate layouts of the cheap motels. For each breakfast we had a parfait or plate of fresh fruits, fresh juice choices, breads and a serious main course. A real, full breakfast! One morning we had an asparagus and leek fritatta, another a wonderful baked oatmeal with pears accompanied with dried fruits and nuts and for our last morning whatever we wanted. Nancy asked us the night before, "If you could have anything you wanted for breakfast, what would it be. Tell me as I like to make things." Well, we told her and there it was...our choices secret to you readers, but Nancy really did come through for us. Nancy is an interesting person who worked for a number of years in the custom brand fashion industry, including in New York City. As such she made a number of international and domestic trips annually so has experienced Asia, Europe and other areas. She also is well - versed in art and art history. We chatted a lot after breakfasts and dinners. And she really knows Coeur d'Alene, so ask her for recommendations. It was so comfortable and personal that we hated to leave. A great experience in a great town. We will certainly return. Thanks so much to Nancy and my wife for breaking my bias toward B&Bs. The McFarland Inn broke the mold for me and I will be less skeptical going forward.

My wife took us here to my surprise (for my birthday) and it was a lovely stay. The owner lives in her own section of her business and is very welcoming and pleasant to talk with. Being January it wasn't very busy which isn't a bad thing for us, but the place wasn't empty either. We saw 3 different couples in our 1 night stay so not bad. Unfortunately her hot tub was not working. In other news she had a great selection of treats to snack on 24/7. The breakfast part was awesome! Huge, varied, delicious selection. The rooms where, dare I say, cute! Very well furnished and cozy. The bath tub with bubble liquid was spot on. This place has old school box TV's which made me smile. I recommend keeping an eye on this place as an option to stay if you are far from home and in Coeur D Alene.

We loved our stay at the McFarland Inn and plan to return. The Inn totally met our expectations, which are always high. Nancy, the inn keeper, was super. You will not be disappointed. The hot tub wasn't functioning, but we were not seeking the hot tub experience. The inn was full several nights of our stay and there wasn't any problems with this. I slept well every night. The breakfasts and happy hours were fantastic. And Charlie (the cat) and Toby (the dog) made my trip even better. Thanks Nancy! marla

There are few things finer than a vacation with no real responsibilities. This place is one of them. I cannot begin to describe the level of spectacular this place is. Hot tub, decor, the breakfast, and even afternoon tea are superb. I can't say enough good things about this place. I will come again.

What a great little place to stay!! Only 5 blocks from the water, very clean, very cute and very comfortable. The owner is easy to work with and very accommodating. Breakfast was very tasty and we couldn't stayed at a better place for the price! Very happy and will definitely recommend to friends!
